Shefford & SandyMatch Report for game against Shefford & Sandy

No one scored for Kettering.

Following a fine win last week in their first fixture of the season against Dudley the team were full of confidence as they travelled to Sandy in Bedfordshire.

The team began well and looked capable of securing another comfortable win but a careless mistake led to Sandy breaking through the Kettering defence and they opened the scoring with a well taken strike. Unfortunately Kettering went to pieces after this and extremely slack marking resulted in five easy goals for the Sandy strike force during the first half.

The half time team talk galvanised the squad and although Kettering failed to score they tightened up the defence sufficiently to deny Sandy any more real chances. Kettering made inroads into the Sandy circle but failed to convert pressure into goals.

There were good debut performances from junior players Patsy and Devon

Earls BartonMatch Report for game against Earls Barton

Scorers were Adele Pryer (1), Alison Maddams (1),

Despite losing 2-3 to newly promoted Earls Barton, in their final friendly fixture before the league season begins next week, Kettering took many positives away from the match.

Earls Barton opened the scoring after a fine run from the 25 and an excellent slip to their striker enabled her to slot the ball just inside the right hand post. Kettering rallied and put pressure on the Earls Barton defence with some excellent passing and a number of forays into their "D".
Kettering forced a penalty corner and although the first strike was parried by the Barton keeper, Adele Pryer was the first to react to the loose ball and she made no mistake as she fired home to score Kettering's first goal. Earls Barton renewed their efforts and Laura Beswick in the Kettering goal was called upon to pull off a string of fine saves. Unfortunately a moment of slack marking enabled Earls Barton to increase their lead just before half time.

A very positive half time team talk encouraged Kettering and saw them maintain greater possession of the ball throughout the second half. Tracy Sheridan picked up the ball just outside the circle and her pass to Adele Pryer was cleverly slipped through to Alison Maddams who was perfectly placed to wrong foot the Earls Barton keeper and she neatly deflected the ball into the goal.

Kettering continued to pressure the Earls Barton defence but unfortunately were caught on the break. Poor clearances from the Kettering defence together with persistence from the Earls Barton attack force was rewarded when they scored their third goal.

Kettering did their utmost to level the score but were denied by the clock

WELLINGBORO 3sMatch Report for game against WELLINGBORO 3s

Scorers were Alison Maddams (1), Mary Schwier (2),

Kettering began their league campaign in division 2 of the County League in fine style with an emphatic 3 – 1 win over Wellingborough 3rd X1

Adjusting well to a new system of play, Kettering put Wellingborough under all sorts of pressure which paid off when Mary Schwuk, showing great determination throughout, managed to open the scoring after following up on a poor clearance from the Wellingborough defence.

Kettering continued to pile on the pressure and were rewarded yet again when Alison Maddams deflected the ball into the back of the net

Wellingborough fought back and a moment of slack marking by the Kettering defence allowed Wellingborough space and a fine move by the Wellingborough striker enabled her to wrong foot the keeper and put Wellingborough onto the score sheet.

Kettering re grouped and a fine aerial from skipper Michelle Tanser found Mary Schwuk again unmarked and in space and she made no mistake as she netted Kettering’s 3rd goal

OLNEYMatch Report for game against OLNEY

Scorers were Ysobel Rees (2), Liz Dakin (1),

Kettering took many positives away from their 4 – 3 defeat to Olney who were relegated last season into Division 2 of the County League

Kettering opened the scoring after youngster Yssie Rees found the back of the net following good work from the Kettering midfield. With confidence running high Kettering continued to pile on the pressure and Yssie Rees was on hand yet again when she picked up an excellent pass from Liz Dakin and slotted the ball home past the unsighted keeper

Earls Barton were always a threat to the Kettering team however but were denied any real scoring chances following some excellent work from defender Louise Storey and keeper Laura Beswick. Unfortunately just before the break Earls Barton’s determination paid off as they managed to scramble the ball home to give them a fighting chance going into ½ time.

Kettering were slow to regroup at the start of the second period and Earls Barton capitalised on the poor marking in defence. With the forwards allowed to run at the Kettering “D”, keeper Beswick was given no chance as Earls Barton fired home three quick goals.

Kettering from being 2 – 1 up found themselves looking at a 4 – 2 defeat but it is a testament to the Kettering team that they managed to up the pace yet again and tireless work from Adele Pryer and Sherry Shawcross in mid field and Mary Schwier and Elise Abrams up front unsettled the Earls Barton side. Finding space opening up in front of her Liz Dakin forged her way through the Earls Barton defence and made no mistake as she gave Kettering hope with a third goal.

On one of the hottest days of the year both teams were tiring but Kettering continued to push for the equalizer. Unfortunately time was against them and despite a number of close chances the team had to settle for a 4 – 3 loss in their second league game of the season.

RUSH & HIGHAMMatch Report for game against RUSH & HIGHAM

Scorers were Elise Abrams (3), Sherry Shawcross (1),

A first half hat trick from Elise Abrams gave Kettering the boost they needed after their narrow loss the previous week to Olney. Rushden & Higham struggled to contain the Kettering mid field and Kettering opened the scoring after Michelle Tanser’s pass to Sherry Shawcross was skilfully slipped through to Elise Abrams who fired home with great confidence.

Shawcross was on hand yet again as Kettering surged forward and again a pin point pass to Abrams enabled her to slot home her second goal. Rushden and Higham looked for space through the centre of the Kettering defence but “player of the match” Calia Swain was more than a match for them and her hard work and determination denied Rushden any real chances.

To finish the half it was the Shawcross/Abrams combination that yet again opened up the Rushden defence and Abrams goal allowed Kettering to enter the break 3 – 0 up

Throughout the second half Rushden dropped more players back into defence and despite their best efforts Kettering found it increasingly difficult to find a way through.

Occasional forays by Rushden into the Kettering half of the pitch were ably dealt with by Patsy-Jo Turner, Louise Storey and Calia Swain in defence and Kettering were rarely put under any real pressure. Newcomer Beth Borbas grew in confidence as the game progressed and performed remarkably well creating plenty of chances for her forwards. Her pass through to Sherry Shawcross, who had set up all the first half goals for Abrams, enabled Shawcross to get onto the score card herself with her first and Kettering’s 4th goal.

SAINTS 4sMatch Report for game against SAINTS 4s

Scorers were Elise Abrams (2), Helen Keyworth (1), Sherry Shawcross (2),

A goal in each half from Northampton Saints was not enough to prevent Kettering recording another superb win by 5 goals to 2 in Division 2 of the County League.

Elise Abrams opened for Kettering with a well taken strike midway through the first half following a good build up through Patsy-Jo Turner, Daisy Reid and Helen Keyworth down the right. Saints however responded well just before half time, when some slack marking allowed a 2 on 1 with the keeper giving Laura Beswick little chance to make the clearance, and they were able to slot home their first goal.

Elise Abrams was on hand yet again at the start of the second period after Michelle Tanser crossed the ball for her to fire home past the unsighted keeper. Saints responded with a breakaway goal but this only inspired Kettering to up their game and begin passing the ball with more confidence and determination.

Helen Keyworth who had set up many chances for her team from the right of mid field was on hand herself to put Kettering ahead when she picked up a cross from the left and her powerful shot left the keeper stranded.

This opened the flood gates for the home team as Sherry Shawcross who had worked tirelessly throughout the game picked up the ball from the right and on the run skilfully powered the ball into the back of the net.
And it was Shawcross yet again who put the game well and truly beyond Saints as her determined approach enabled her to scrabble the ball home after a goal mouth mêlée in which Saints failed to clear the ball

SAINTS 3sMatch Report for game against SAINTS 3s

Scorers were Elise Abrams (1), Beth Borgas (1),

A goal in each half from Kettering was not enough to prevent Northampton Saints 3rd X1 winning the first encounter between the two teams by 4 goals to 2 in Division 2 of the County League.

Saints put Kettering under intense pressure from the start of the game and the Kettering defence battled hard to keep the ball out of the “D”. Laura Beswick in goal was in outstanding form as she pulled off numerous athletic saves and the defence led by Louise Storey were well disciplined and remained focussed on the task in hand. The team battled well and excellent tackling from Clare Jones and Liz Dakin denied Saints the openings they sort.

Against the run of play, junior player (later voted player of the match) Beth Borgas picked up the ball from a well weighted Liz Dakin pass and from the midway line weaved her way past a number of Saints defenders and slipped the ball through to Elise Abrams. Elise Abrams who has been lethal in front of the goal this season made no mistake as she fired the ball past the Saints Keeper.

The pressure from Saints eventually began to take its toll however and they managed to slot in two goals just before the break.
Saints made their intentions clear from the start of the second period as well when they managed to scramble the ball home following a rather messy goal mouth melee.

With nothing to lose Kettering changed formation and threw more players forward and the decision paid off as Elise Abrams this time became the provider for Beth Borgas to slot home a second well taken goal for Kettering.

Kettering continued to push forward with Tracey Sheridan and Sherry Shawcross working tirelessly in mid field to create openings but with the team pushing forward Kettering were caught on the break and unfortunately conceded a 4th goal just as the final whistle blew.

TOWCESTER 3sMatch Report for game against TOWCESTER 3s

Scorers were Emma Willis (1),

In their final game of the season before the start of the return games Kettering eventually ran out 1 – 0 winners against Towcester 3rd X1 but generally made hard work of the fixture.

Kettering maintained possession for the majority of the game and had numerous shots on goal with Mary Schwier, Elise Abrams and Devon all going close, but excellent goal keeping from Sue Christopher in the Towcester goal denied Kettering the opening they sort.

Towcester had a few breaks but the defence held firm with Louise Storey, Calia Swain and Patsy-Jo Turner defending well in front of keeper Clare Jones who had little to do throughout the game.

Eventually Michelle Tanser, who had an outstanding game in midfield, slipped the ball through to Mary Schwier whose shot on goal was picked up by Emma Willis who fired home to give Kettering the lead they deserved.

Kettering will need to make the chances they create count next week when they play Wellingborough 3rd’s next week away at Wrenn School

OLNEYMatch Report for game against OLNEY

Scorers were Mary Schwier (1),

Two goals either side of half time by division 2 league leaders Olney put an end to Kettering’s hopes of moving up the table into second place.

Kettering maintained possession for the majority of first half and had numerous shots on goal with Alison Maddams and Elise Abrams both going close but they really struggled to turn the numerous chances they created into goals. Olney, dangerous on the break, were the first to open the scoring and managed to find the back of the Kettering goal midway through the first half.

Kettering responded in the best possible way when Sue Russell injected some pace into the game and took the ball down the left to cross into the “D”. The ball was cleverly picked up by Beth Borbas and she passed the ball through to Mary Schwier who was perfectly placed to slip the ball past the keeper and just inside the right hand post.

The game continued with Kettering rapidly switching from defence to attack as Olney gained in strength but it was Olney’s greater determination that paid off as they collected a second goal just before the break.

Kettering were twice caught twice on the break in the second half and two goals resulted when Olney created two on one’s with the Kettering keeper giving Laura Beswick little chance to prevent the goals. Kettering failed to raise their game to the standard required during the second half and had to settle for a very disappointing 4 – 1 loss.

The one highlight of the second period was an outstanding cross by junior player Beth Borbas, who continues to show immense promise, to Alison Maddams who was inches away from netting the pass

RUSH & HIGHAMMatch Report for game against RUSH & HIGHAM

Scorers were Beth Borgas (1), Elise Abrams (1), Mary Schwier (1), Michelle Tanser (2),

Following their defeat to Olney last week Kettering 3rd’s were determined to make amends at home to ten “man” Rushden and Higham
Kettering began well and maintained possession for the majority of first half and the defence were rarely troubled by the occasional press from the Rushden & Higham forwards. The defence were able to put into practice the work done during training sessions and were particularly effective in changing the direction of play to force Rushden & Higham wide. One particular switch led to the first goal after Liz Dakin received the ball from Louise Storey on the right and sent the ball down the left for Sherry Shawcross to pick up. Good interplay between Sherry Shawcross and Mary Schwier led to the first goal after some slick passing between the two, wrong footed both the defenders and the keeper and gave Schwier a clear shot on goal.
Kettering maintained the pressure and forced a number of penalty corners. Kettering failed to convert the first couple but eventually Michelle Tanser slipped the ball through to Elise Abrams who scored after her fierce shot was deflected into the goal by the Rushden defender. A penalty corner moments later saw Tanser getting her name onto the score sheet as well after firing home a first time shot from the edge of the “D”.

Kettering were very satisfied with their 3- 0 lead at half time
Rushden & Higham tired as the game progressed and
Beth Borbas, who had an exceptional game in mid field, was able to intercept numerous clearances from the Rushden defence. She linked up exceptionally well with debutant Sienna, whose positional play was outstanding and the two of them caused Rushden & Higham all sorts of problems.
Borbas and Sienna on the right, Mary Shwier and Sherry Shawcross on the left, with Elise Abrams in the middle all went close but Kettering did not score again until midway through the second half. The ball was passed through to Mary Schwier’s whose slip to Michelle Tanser was cleverly knocked on for Beth Borbas who was perfectly placed to tap the ball home.
Captain, Michelle Tanser ended the encounter with an outstanding, perfectly placed strike from the edge of the “D” which gave the Rushden keeper no chance
Kettering were pleased with their 5 – 0 win and look forward to their final league encounter next week away to Northampton Saints 4th X1.

SawtryMatch Report for game against Sawtry

Scorers were Sherry Shawcross (1),

Kettering began the New Year with a friendly against Sawtry Ladies Hockey Club who now play their matches in Oundle.

A 1-1 draw was a fair result in which the age and experience of Kettering proved to be a fair match against the youth, speed and fitness of the Sawtry players.

Kettering began well with Mary Schwier, Elise Abrams and Tracy Sheridan working hard up front to create numerous chances and all three players went close to scoring. They were denied however by some excellent saves from the Sawtry keeper who quite rightly won the player of the match award from her team mates.

Sawtry settled into the game and were dangerous on the break but the Kettering defence held firm with Sue Russell, Michelle Tanser and Liz Dakin denying the forwards any real openings. Louise Storey marshalled her defence well and Kettering was rarely troubled during most of the first half. Unfortunately seconds before half time break a good build up from Sawtry down the right saw the ball crossed to the far post to find an unmarked Sawtry player who managed to cleverly slot the ball between post and keeper.

The second half saw the momentum switching rapidly between the two teams with both going close but as Kettering tired Clare Jones in the Kettering goal was called upon to pull off more and more outstanding saves and was herself quoted man of the match by her Kettering team mates.

It took a moment of brilliant individual skill for Kettering to level the scores. Sherry Shawcross took the ball into the “D” and after weaving her way past two defenders drew the keeper and a superb reverse drag gave her the space to slip the ball into the back of the net.

This proved to be an excellent fixture to start the New Year with great team spirit shown throughout. Kettering resume league fixtures next Saturday when they take on Northampton Saints @ Moulton School, 4.30 start.

Kettering 3rd’s who began the New Year in 2nd place in the League unfortunately lost at the weekend to 4th placed Northampton Saints 3rd X1.

Kettering were under pressure from the start but Kettering held firm with Sue Russell having an outstanding game in the centre of the defence. Despite hard work from Sherry Shawcross and Robyn Baird in mid field Kettering struggled to get the ball through to their forwards and the Saints goal keeper was rarely troubled throughout the first half.

Kettering had a disastrous opening to the second half when they conceded two quick goals but were not deterred and continued to fight hard for possession. They settled and tried to push forward and they did manage to trouble the Saints defence with one or two skilful breaks through Mary Schwier and Emily Holt in particular.

Louise Storey marshalled her defence well and had an outstanding game but Storey and her team were unable to prevent Saints scoring yet again mid-way through the half to leave the final score line

OLNEYMatch Report for game against OLNEY

Scorers were Alison Maddams (1), Elise Abrams (1),

Kettering returned to league action at the weekend after an enforced break due to the bad weather

Kettering were put under pressure right from the start with top placed Olney opening the scoring with a well taken opportunist goal after a mistake by the Kettering defence. This goal was scored within minutes of the game beginning but Kettering settled quickly and held firm for most of the half with Stacy Hall having an outstanding game in the centre of the defence. The teams were fairly evenly matched with both sides making inroads into their opposing defence but it was Olney who made their possession count when they slotted home their second effort to lead 2 – 0.
Kettering showed great character as they continued to look for an opening through the Olney defence and eventually their hard work paid off as Alison Maddams slotted home a well taken goal moments before the half time whistle blew

Kettering had a disastrous opening to the second half when they conceded two quick goals but were not deterred and continued to fight hard for possession. They settled and tried to push forward and they did manage to trouble the Olney defence with one or two skilful breaks through Mary Schwier and Michelle Tanser in particular.

Sue Russell and Beth Borbas worked tirelessly in midfield and Sienna McNeil made some excellent moves down the right. Kettering went close on a number of occasions with Alison Maddams and Elise Abrams on target but both were denied by some excellent keeping from the Olney keeper. Olney were slightly more ruthless in attack however and took their chances well and unfortunately Kettering conceded two more goals late in the second period.

Kettering, to their credit, never gave up and despite the atrocious playing conditions fought on to the very end. Captain Michelle Tanser who had troubled the Olney defence throughout the game managed to weave her way through a number of defenders and slip the ball to Elise Abrams who made no mistake as she scored a second goal for Kettering.

Kettering was disappointed in the final 2– 6 scoreline which many felt was not a true reflection of the game which saw both sides maintaining almost equal possession.

RUSH & HIGHAMMatch Report for game against RUSH & HIGHAM

Scorers were Mary Schwier (3),

A Mary Schwier hat trick was enough for Kettering to earn a hard fought win against Rushden & Higham.

Kettering began well and their hard work and determined approach in attack earned them the first of a number of penalty corners. Sue Russell injected to Michelle Tanser who slipped the ball through to Sherry Shawcross. Following ideas gained during training sessions Shawcross crossed the ball wide of the left hand post for Mary Schwier to slot home.

Schwier was on target yet again moments later when Sienna O’Neil who had made a great run down the right crossed, again wide of the left hand post, for Schwier to tap home.

The second period saw Rushden & Higham come back into the game and they pulled two goals back to equalise at 2 – 2

Kettering were not deterred however and continued to play some good passing Hockey and it was down to Schwier to react to a poor clearance to steal a win after reacting first to a loose ball on the goal line

SAINTS 4sMatch Report for game against SAINTS 4s

Scorers were Mary Schwier (2), Alison Maddams (1), Michelle Tanser (1),

Mary Schwier was on target for the second week running when she slipped home two almost identical goals just inside the left hand post. The first was from a Michelle Tanser cross and the second followed a good build up down the left between Schwier and Sherry Shawcross. The move eventually culminated in Shawcross providing the perfect cross for Schwier to slip home.

Northampton Saints pulled one back just before the break when the ball was unfortunately deflected past the Kettering keeper by one if her own defenders.
Kettering were not deterred however and continued to play some good passing Hockey and it was down to Alison Maddams to react to a poor clearance to steal a third goal after reacting first to a loose ball on the goal line.

Kettering were looking confident with the 3 – 1 lead but Saints upped the pressure and reduced the arrears with a second goal.

Kettering had a moment of uncertainty but then settled and a weaving run from Captain Michelle Tanser put the game beyond Saints when she scored a fantastic goal which gave the Saints keeper no chance.
