BedfordMatch Report for game against Bedford

Scorers were Mandy Starsmore (1),

It was a game of 2 halves for Kettering. We knew it was going to be a tough game against Bedford, a team that came convincing 2nd in Midlands Premier League last year. We played our usual formation and for most of the first half were on the back foot and we looked like we hadn’t woken up from the summer. Unfortunately our marking on 3 occasions let us down at the back and we let 3 goals in before half time. After a good team talk from Ian and adopting a refreshingly new formation we piled on the pressure in the 2nd half winning some short corners, 1 of which Mandy Starsmore managed to convert using a position in front of the keeper to flick the ball neatly into the back of the net. Unfortunately Bedford also scored a 4th goal in the 2nd half and so the game finished 1-4. For the first game back there were some positive points to take from the game especially concerning the new formation. Also a couple of our younger girls from the 2nd team played and performed very well against such a strong opposition.

WellingboroughMatch Report for game against Wellingborough

Scorers were Julie Allington (3), Mandy Starsmore (1),

The second friendly for Kettering Ladies 1s was a complete turnaround from last week. For the majority of the game we were camped in the Wellingbrough half, winning a lot of short corners and piling on the pressure up front to not allow Wellingborough to get into any stride. Although we new our opposition were quick on the break and so we had to keep our wits about us to prevent them scoring with their counter attacks. We finished the 1st half 3-0 up and feeling confident. In the second half we allowed Wellingbrough in to score their goal, but we responded well by scoring our 4th goal soon after giving Julie Allington her first hatrick of the season. A good performance by all members of the team but man of the match vote was given to Alice Williams for her commanding performance up front.

CambridgeMatch Report for game against Cambridge

Scorers were Laura Cave (1), Julie Allen (1),

A great performance by the ladies 1s brought their second win of the season. A friendly away to Cambridge, we knew this was going to be a much tougher game than yesterday knowing that this team came down from National League last year, and with us only having 11 players. We started well though and put the pressue on right from the off, with some great runs up front by Alice Williams and Julie Allington. The defence were much tighter on their players today with Cath Irvin and Kate Randle both making their first appearances in the back 2, so the number of counter attacks that occured were much less than yesterday. Through the middle the girls hassled all game and kept the opposition at bay. Julie Allen winning a man of the match performance held the middle of the pitch very well. Both goals came from short corner strikes, Laura Cave getting the first in the first half from a straight strike and Julie Allen getting the second in the second half from a shot from the left hand side of the D. Lucy Walshall our goal keeper had a bit more to do than yestrday and performed well making some great stops to keep her first clean sheet of the season. One of our new girls to the 1s this season Jess Henson played extrememly well supporting the play down the left hand side to create a lot of successful attacking chances. Again a great game to take a lot of positives from.

Shefford & SandyMatch Report for game against Shefford & Sandy

Scorers were Mandy Starsmore (2), Cath Irvin (1), Julie Allington (1), Lucy Dakin (1),

Kettering started slowly however soon applied pressure to the opposition defence. Kettering won several short corners, scoring from 3 of them, Mandy Starsmore getting on the end of 2 with Cath Irvine striking another powerfully into the corner. Kettering continued to attack using their new formation which resulted in another accurate strike from the top of the circle from Lucy D (who was voted M.O.M and also D.O.D for the celebration!) Just before half time Julie Allington finished the rout, scoring with an excellent reverse strike powerfully beating the keeper.

Kettering were well disciplined and good defensive work from Anna Holmes and Kate Randle ensured the half time score was 5-0. Although the second half Kettering created several further chances, Julie Allen going the closest hitting the post, they were unable to convert, the final score 5-1.

Beeston 2Match Report for game against Beeston 2

No one scored for Kettering.

After a nervy start with Kettering soaking up the pressure, we turned the tables and applied some good pressure through some brilliant passing play. Although with Kettering unable to convert the half time score line was 0-0, which reflected well on us with there being a mix of 1st and 2nd team playing. The 2s players had some great performances though and particularly noted were Julia Telford and Stacey Hall who aided the team in keeping its stability throughout the game. Unfortunately in the second half a yellow card was given to a Kettering player and we were down to 10 men. Unfortunately the luck didnt seem to run for Kettering and Beeston scored a scrambled goal with a lucky 2nd following soon after. Altogether though a good performance by a depleted Kettering side.

OLTONMatch Report for game against OLTON

No one scored for Kettering.

Kettering started strong and soon earned several short corners but could not get the ball over the goal line. Lucy Walshaw in goal made some excellent saves to deny Olton their first goal and the half time score was 0-0. However shortly after the start of the 2nd half Olton scored a scrambled goal and then shortly after scored a strike. Kettering defended really well for the majority of the game with Julie Allen getting Man of the Match for a brilliant performance and some great tackles. Kettering unfortuantely could not create the good passing play they had shown in previous frendlies and the final score ended 2-0.

NORTH STAFFSMatch Report for game against NORTH STAFFS

Scorers were Julie Allen (1), Julie Allington (1),

Kettering started strong and soon put pressure onto North Staffs defence. Julie Allen scoring from a short corner strike whch was followed by an excellent goal started with quick passes down the right between Alice Williams & Mandy Starsmore. Persistence led to Mandy Starsmore beating the defender and an accurate pass finding Julie Allington to fire the ball into the goal. Kettering continued to apply pressure considering the hot weather and looked comfortably ahead. Unfortunately, an horrific injury to Laura Cave stopped the game as she needed hospital treatment which unsettled Kettering who had to re-jig the defence. Kettering completed the first half 2 nil ahead. Unfortunately, soon after the start of the 2nd half kettering went down to 10 men due to a stick above the head. Kettering continued to defend well though and pressured North Staffs and were awarded several short corners nearly scoring with a good save from their keeper.
Although Lucy Walshaw made some fine saves to keep North Staffs at bay they scored a scrappy goal half way through the second half. This was then followed by a penalty stroke when a Kettering defender was alleged to have deliberately kicked the ball in the D, but felt justified with an excellent save by Lucy Walshaw. Kettering finished the game 2-1 which was a well deserved win.

NORTH NOTTSMatch Report for game against NORTH NOTTS

Scorers were Julie Allington (1), Julia Telford (1), Lucy Dakin (1),

After a win last week, kettering were feeling confident going into this weeks match. From the start Kettering fought hard and put the pressure on the visitors. Unfortunately after giving away a few short corners Kettering were unable to keep the ball out of their net going 1 nil down to a deflection that the keeper had no chance of saving. Kettering fought back with good passing play through the middle by Lucy Dakin, Julie Allen and Linzi Webster. Julia Telford made some great tackles in the middle of the field to keep North Notts at bay but unfortunately got a yellow card for bad language. To make up for this however once back on the field she pushed up and dribbled skillfully into the opponants D to hit a lovely strike into the bottom left corner to take the score to 1 all. In the second half Kettering showed that they had the drive and determination to keep playing strongly. A Man of the Match performance by Hannah Myers kept the ball out of our D, and some great pressure up front from Alice Garnham helped keep the ball in our opponants half of the field. Another goal a piece took the score to 2 all and made the finish very exciting. Kettering carried on pushing up the field and also tracked back to produce some great defensive work to keep the opposition out of our D. In the last 5 mins Kettering earned another short corner. The ball came out to Lucy Dakin on the left who smashed the ball from the top into the back of the net. Julie Allen then kept the ball very well in the middle of the field to make sure the opponants had no chance to score an equaliser. The game finished 3-2. A solid performance by Kettering.

LOUGHBOROUGH 2sMatch Report for game against LOUGHBOROUGH 2s

Scorers were Julie Allen (1), Laura Cave (1), Julie Allington (1),

Kettering and Loughborough 2s games have always been tough and close matches. Being quite evenly matched both teams put pressure on their opposition, with Loughborough opening the scoring but Ketteirng soon equalising with a short corner. Kettering had improved on their marking over the past few weeks and we did well to keep Loughborough out of our D. At the other end of the pitch Kettering were piling on the pressure and won many short corners throughout the match. Loughborough however scored their second goal first, but again Kettering followed soon after with their second from another short corner. This meant that the game was in for an exciting finish with both teams going out for the win. Luckily Kettering won out in the end with their third goal coming from another short corner. The defense then put in a really good peformance to keep lougborough out of the D meaning the game ended 3-2.

LICHFIELDMatch Report for game against LICHFIELD

Scorers were Kate Randle (1),

We knew this was going t be one of the toughest games we had played so far, but kettering showed that they were up for the fight putting a lot of pressure on the opposition all through the game. Lichfield has some very quick forwards though and hit us on the break a few times in the 1st half and some last ditch tackles by laura Cave, Hannah Myers and Beth Winfield kept the score 0-0 at half time. The second half was much the same with Alice Williams and Julie Allington using their speed and the width of the pitch to get the ball into the oppositions D, but we were unable to capitalise. As a few of the Kettering players started to look tired the opposition won a few short corners, converting one from a ball into the D from the right hand side which was unfortunately deflected into the goal by a Kettering player. Their second goal came soon after. Kettering however kept battling winning a few more short corners, one of which Kate Randle slotted into the right corner from a straight strike on goal. Kettering were back in the game but unfortunately couldnt make all of our pressure result in anymore goals and the game finished 1-2. An unlucky score for kettering but we have to start making our pressure on the opposition count.

StourportMatch Report for game against Stourport

Scorers were Mandy Starsmore (1),

Games between Kettering and Stourport have always been close matches, and we knew this was going to be no different with the opposition being mid table in the league above us. We put up a good performance though and battled well throughout the game. Kettering went ahead in the 1st half with some great dribbling skill from Linzi to take the ball across the top of the D and then reverse pass the ball back across the D for Mandy Starsmore to run onto and slot home. That is how the 1st half finished. In the second half Kettering felt unlucky not to get a penalty when Alice Willaims got taken out by the keeper for the 3rd time this season, and the decision not going her way for the 3rd time too. Kettering were under pressure a bit more in the second half as our composure on the ball wained towards the end of the game and Stourport had a few more chances on goal. Their first goal came from a short corner, which again Kettering felt hard done by as a swing and a miss from the attacking player at the top of the D was waived play on, and the player scored with her second attempt to hit the ball. Stourport scored again with a hit across the D deflected into the goal by a player running onto the cross, which Lucy W had no chance of saving and Linzi was unlucky not to pinch off of her. The game finished 1-2 but Kettering had moments of great play during the game and will be working on getting that consistent.
